South Bend International Airport (IATA: SBN, ICAO: KSBN) was founded in 1929 when Vincent Hugo Bendix, founder of Bendix Aviation, bought land for the future airport which was later called Bendix Municipal Airport; however, the airport was officially opened for the public's use in 1933.
Later, the airport was renamed as St. Joseph County Airport, then Michiana Regional Transportation Center. The airport received its current name only in 2000.
Up until the 1980s, the airport was operating through only four runways: runway 9 that was 5000-feet long, runway 6 which is now a taxiway, runway 12 which is currently a taxiway as well, and runway 18 which was 3.059-feet long. Later, in 1963, the runway 9 was extended to 6000 feet.
On April 23, 2014, the St. Joseph County Airport Authority officially stated that the new name of the airport would be South Bend International Airport.

South Bend

South Bend is a county seat of the St. Joseph County, Indiana, the United States that is situated on the St. Joseph Rive. The city had an approximate population of 101.168 people in 2010. Meanwhile, the population of its Metropolitan Statistical Area was evaluated as 318.586 people and 721.296 residents in Combined Statistical Area.
South Bend is considered the fourth-largest city of Indiana state and acts as both economic and cultural hub of Northern Indiana.

Indiana University South Bend is considered the third-largest university in Indiana. Other universities worth mentioning are the Purdue Polytechnic Institute and Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.
Public schools, in turn, are managed by the South Bend Community School Corporation that runs ten intermediate centers (grades 5-8), 18 primary centers (grades K-4), and six high schools (grades 9-12) per year. The outstanding school located in South Bend is Veritas Academy, together with Xavier School of Excellence and Career Academy South Bend that were opened in 2009 and 2011 respectively. There are also public schools in South Bend as Trinity School at Greenlawn, the Stanley Clark School, and the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.

It operates through three asphalt runways: 9L/27R is which is 1.311 meters long, 9R/27L which is 2.565 meters long, and 18/36 which is 2.164 meters long. The terminal was initially designed by HOK and Cole Associates; however, the expansion project that took place in 2011 was prepared by Ken Herceg & Associates.
